Our headquarters is located in the northernmost Japanese prefecture of Hokkaido. Hokkaido is home to a large scallop farming industry. The shells from these scallops are usually thrown away as industrial waste - over 200,000 tons of scallop shells every year.
We wondered how this huge quantity of a potentially valuable natural resource could be effectively recycled. When we started looking
into it, we discovered that there was a long tradition in Japan of using shell lime,
produced by burning seashells, in plaster.
We thought it a shame that such a promising material was not being put to good
use, and decided to recycle this shell waste for use in wall plaster.
The result is our Zen Ocean Plaster, an almost entirely natural material. Zen Ocean Plaster consists of 95% recycled scallop shells and 5% cellulose fiber, CMC and color pigments. Conventional wall
coatings used in new home construction today contain many harmful chemicals
and substances (VOC's) that may contribute to so-called gsick buildingh syndrome.
Our Zen Ocean Plaster does not contain such substances so you can breathe easily with peace of mind.
Furthermore, Zen Ocean Plaster itself breathes: it has good air and
moisture transmission properties (it readily absorbs and releases moisture)
and naturally improves indoor air quality. It also has deodorizing properties and resists mold. Even if it absorbs moisture mold will not grow inside the wall,
an added benefit for people with allergies.
Zen Ocean Plaster itself can even be recycled and used as garden soil. It is both good for the environment and your health. Unlike traditional plasters it does not shrink over time so is not susceptible to cracking. It can be troweled on directly over drywall. It goes on in one coat and is very easy to work with. It is much easier to put on than clay based plasters and does not require maintenance. The natural properties of the scallop shells give it a beautiful glossy finish which fills your home with beautiful natural light.
Balance with nature, the use of recycled natural materials from the ocean, clean healthy air and the beauty of textured plaster walls - that's Zen Ocean Plaster.
